The Formula 1 race has been held at the Miami circuit since 2022. In 2024, the venue also hosted the so-called Saturday Sprint.
The history of Formula 1 in Miami is relatively brief but has been marked by significant interest and attempts to bring the prestigious racing series to the city.
In April 2018, an announcement was made that Formula 1 had struck a deal with Miami to host a Grand Prix race beginning in 2019. The proposed circuit was envisioned to encircle the Hard Rock Stadium, the renowned home of the Miami Dolphins NFL team. However, these plans encountered opposition from residents and businesses, citing concerns about noise, traffic, and disruptions to the community.
Consequently, the Miami Grand Prix plans were shelved, prompting ongoing negotiations to identify a suitable location and address logistical challenges. Despite these hurdles, both Formula 1 and city officials harboured a strong desire to bring the race to Miami, recognizing its allure as a vibrant and globally recognized destination. Fast forward to April 2021, after years of discussions and adjustments to the proposed circuit design, Formula 1 announced a landmark 10-year agreement to stage a Grand Prix in Miami. The race was slated to unfold on a new circuit around the Hard Rock Stadium complex, with the inaugural event scheduled for 2022.
The prospect of the Miami Grand Prix promised to introduce another opulent and prestigious spectacle to the Formula 1 calendar, offering an opportunity to captivate a fresh audience in the United States while bolstering the sport's worldwide appeal.
The first F1 race was held here in May 2022, won by Max Verstappen, who defended his triumph in 2023. In 2024, the Miami Grand Prix was won by Lando Norris.
